Our environment is the life-support system for Earth. It includes the air we breathe, the water we drink, the land we live on, and the plants and animals we share our world with. But today, our environment is facing serious threats from climate change, pollution and loss of nature. According to recent data, in India the monsoon in 2025 began with record-breaking rainfall in some areas, only to turn into drought in others later in the year. Also, many Indian cities are warming faster than rural areas because buildings, concrete and less open green spaces cause higher temperatures.
One big problem is air and water pollution. Polluted air can cause breathing problems and polluted rivers hurt fish and make water unsafe. Another threat is the loss of trees and forests, when trees disappear, animals lose homes and the earth loses a natural way to cool down. Also, rising global temperatures mean glaciers are melting and sea-levels are rising. For example, a United Nations report on glaciers emphasises how mountain ice is shrinking and threatening water supplies.

So, what can we do to save our environment? Here are some important steps:
1. Plant and protect trees: Trees absorb carbon dioxide and give us oxygen. Children can plant saplings at home or in school.
2. Save energy and use it wisely: Use fans or air-conditioners only when needed, turn off lights and devices when not in use.
3. Reduce plastic and reuse things: Avoid single-use plastics, carry reusable bottles and bags, and support recycling.
4. Conserve water: Rainwater harvesting, fixing leaks, using water for good purpose—these help.
5. Use cleaner travel: Walk, cycle, use public transport when possible; fewer cars mean less air pollution.
6. Learn and spread awareness: Talk to friends, family and classmates about the environment. Schools can hold nature clubs or clean-up events.

Also governments and communities must act: they need stronger laws to stop pollution, protect forests and wetlands, and invest in renewable energy like solar and wind. As per a climate tracker, although India is increasing renewable energy, it still has a big way to go because fossil fuels remain dominant.
When people big and small work together the environment gets a chance to heal. Each tree planted, each plastic avoided, each litre of water saved and each kilometer we walk instead of drive helps. Let us all pledge to protect our environment, not only because it’s nice, but because it is important for our own lives and for future generations who will live on this beautiful planet.
